The Gel Nimbus and the Gel Cumulus are the most popular neutral running shoes from Asics. We are here comparing the latest models: Asics Nimbus vs Asics Cumulus.
Foo Bar

The ASICS Gel Nimbus sits at the top of ASICS' traditional lineup of neutral trainers. It has been a fan favourite for 26 years now. The Cumulus is what in the industry is called a "takedown" - which means a shoe with similar design inspiration and use, but with some changes that make it more affordable.

What are these differences between the two? Let's find out!

Verdict
The Asics Gel-Nimbus 26 is a cushioned daily trainer that is an everyday shoe for most runners of all abilities. It has great outsole grip, soft enough cushion, and a stable, responsive ride.
The Asics Gel-Cumulus 26 is a cushioned daily trainer that is an everyday shoe for most runners of all abilities. It has a great rocker ride that is both smooth and soft. The heel tab can rub the back of your ankle, though, which would definitely bother some people.

Sole unit: Gel Nimbus 26 vs Gel Cumulus 26

The sole of the ASICS Gel Nimbus is made of super soft FF Blast+ Eco. It delivers a really plush underfoot feel. The Nimbus has one GEL unit in the heel. The GEL unit absorbs vibration during foot strikes. The result is a soft, cushioned sole that is ideal for running long mileage, also for heavier-set runners.

The sole of the ASICS Gel Cumulus is made of FF Blast+ – a responsive (read: bouncy) material. This makes the Cumulus a tad less soft but more useful for picking up the pace. A Gel Unit in the heel is also present.

The main difference in real-world running is that the Nimbus keeps being “softer” for longer, making it ideal for very long running sessions (or for heavier runners) while the Cumulus tends to become “harder” at longer distances.

Upper unit: Gel Nimbus 26 vs Gel Cumulus 26

The upper of the Cumulus is made of engineered mesh while the Nimbus’ upper is made of knitted material. The Nimbus’ upper is more stretchy and softer than the Cumulus’ upper.

Both uppers fit true to size and are available in a variety of widths. They both have excellent lockdown and are supremely comfortable.

Check the full reviews of each shoe for detailed pictures of the upper, where you can have a look at those details.

All in all, the upper is great in both shoes and I don’t believe it should be a factor while deciding.

Which one to buy: Gel Nimbus 26 vs Gel Cumulus 26

All said and done, which of these two shoes would I recommend?

The first big difference is the price: you pay a $20 premium for the Nimbus. I am not sure anymore that the Nimbus is so much more value over the Cumulus, but I also think that the Nimbus is priced well for its specifications and the Cumulus might be a steal.

Heavier runners, or runners which prefer softer shoes that keep their comfort over a longer mileage should be headed towards the Nimbus.

Runners that are looking for a soft shoe that has some more responsiveness and don’t mind sacrificing some of that softness should but the Cumulus.
